If you don't know... Charity Muiruri

Charity Muiruri is an actor, filmmaker, freelance creative and Co-founder of The Basement Bunch (with Adeyinka Akinrinade and Hannah Kelly), based in Luton.

I asked Charity some questions!

HALEY: How do you describe your work?

CHARITY: I am constantly planning for the next job or the next project. As an actor, who isn't yet represented, I tend to research opportunities for open casting calls and apply where appropriate. As a filmmaker, I collaborate on developing story ideas and drive the artistic and practical approach forward. As a freelance creative, right now I'm working for a production company as a researcher on a documentary film. As a co-founder I'm focused on progressing
The Basement Bunch, with my team which involves more work than I can describe.

HALEY: What’s your artistic mission?

CHARITY: My work is dedicated to every dreamer and achiever especially those who consider themselves underdogs because of their position or status in society. My artistic mission is to connect stories to people; to inspire feeling or emotion, whatever that may be.

HALEY: What are your favourite projects that you’ve worked on so far?

CHARITY:
The Eden Effect (2019) a theatre production. Thick As Thieves (2021) a web-series. The 3rd is a film project that I'm writing and it's a rom-com, I can tell you that much. This will be my first time attempting a screenplay!

HALEY: Where did you study or train? Or did you have any great mentors?

CHARITY: I studied performing arts at Wessex Academy of Performing Arts via
Bath Spa University and trained for 3 months with Alt. Actor Training. I always credit my high-school drama teacher, Damian Bermingham as one of my greatest mentors as well as my uni course leader, Ged Stephenson. I’m also thankful to Emma Gill from University of Bedfordshire, Andy Reeves from Curve Theatre and Tangled Feet Company.

HALEY: What are you working on?

CHARITY: I am playing Alisha in
Thick As Thieves web-series, a story written and directed by Shakira Francis, and produced by The Basement Bunch. We are currently in the production phase and the series will be out on YouTube and other digital platforms, later this year.

HALEY: What artist(s) do you look up to?

CHARITY: In acting or performance, Viola Davis is a longtime fave and Vanessa Kirby is a recent fave. As writers and producers of their own work; Michaela Coel and Issa Rae, and I find Jordan Peele's films groundbreaking.
