Solo Show Creation Lab
If you are an actor or comedian who:
• has an idea for solo show but can’t seem to get started
• is struggling with blank-page paralyses, overwhelm or self-doubt
• is craving camaraderie, inspiration, guidance and deadlines to take your solo show out of your head and into the world
… then this Solo Show Creation Lab is for you.
This 6-session course gives a carefully selected group of actors and comedians the tools, skills, deadlines and confidence to create the solo show they’ve been dreaming of, in a fun, dynamic and supportive environment.
Over the course of the Lab, I guide the group through my own solo creation process which I’ve honed over the last decade creating and touring solos internationally. Step-by-step, we cover generating material, editing on your feet, finding the right narrative arch, incorporating design considerations, how to pitch your show to venues and apply for funding.
In the true spirit of a Laboratory, the sessions are all about about testing, experimentation and practice. Each week I give a brief lecture based on my methodology (with loads tips and shortcuts to save you from making my mistakes!), there’s conversation about solo performance and tons of practical writing and performing exercises and tasks that put you in touch with your instincts, develop your idea and your voice, help you make big strides with your creative process and get comfortable performing solo. Participants regularly perform their work for each other and are expected to complete some homework in between sessions.
The Lab culminates with an informal Scratch Performance for an invited audience. This performance is filmed, so each participant leaves, not only feeling super confident in their solo skills and with concrete next steps for their project, but also with video documentation of their work which they can use when applying for funding and/or when pitching their show to venues.

Haley McGee has been creating, performing and touring solo shows since 2009, alongside a busy career as an actor, writer and voiceover artist. Her solo shows have won awards and accolades, including “Best Production” at United Solo NYC, the world’s largest solo show festival. Here solos have played in over 36 venues in 11 countries around the world and been translated into 4 languages.
Her solos have been described as “defiantly distinctive” (★★★★ The Scotsman), “brilliantly entertaining, witty and poignant” (Lyn Gardner, StageDoor), and “deeply felt, consistently hilarious and hypnotically honest” (Exeunt).
Haley has 6 years of teaching experience, leading workshops and classes for students in high school and university. She believes confidence in anything is built through practice and loves helping artists dare to create the shows they want to make.
